This new 24-story student housing development provides 110 Units and 416 bedrooms, accessory parking, amenity and pool facility, and a retail component for University of Illinois students. The strict program required a form that would allow for abundant natural light while maximizing sleeping rooms along its perimeter. The result is a reinterpretation of the courtyard building with housing divided amongst two main tiers and alternating terracing floor plates connected by a common glass corridor. The façade is articulated with the use of a glass and metal panel grid, and outdoor spaces at each unit are created in the negative spaces left. Towards the bottom of the building, the garage base is a simple composition of glazed masonry framing a glass-projected bay. This bay floats over the retail storefront at the ground level, also marking the building’s main entry.
As the largest student housing development of its kind in Champaign, Illinois, University Tower commanded, and received, a strong integration between program and functionality in order to make it successful.
