Located in Chicago’s South Loop, 571 W. Polk was once an existing three-story warehouse without any interior walls. To create an office environment for an environmental engineering firm, HPA preserved the building’s open floor plan in the build-out.

The centerpiece of the open floor is the pill-shaped conference room, a floating space encased in frosted plexiglass that functions as both function and art. Custom-made cubicles and desks lining the exterior were kept below head height, allowing natural light to filter in. The second floor was reconfigured with a new circulation spine along the south wall, preserving open office floor area with city skyline views. The masonry walls and terracotta tiles were cleaned and left in place. A new polished concrete floor and custom millwork in soft wood tones are balanced against the existing hard surfaces. T
