Landmarks Illinois will honor Hairpin Lofts with a Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award at its annual awards ceremony held today at the InterContinental Chicago Hotel.

Recognized in the Rehabilitation Category, the project transformed the landmarked Sachs Building in Chicago’s Logan Square into affordable housing units and a community art center with retail storefronts. An extensive restoration required removing, rehabilitating and reinstalling 858 limestone pieces, as well as recreating the original parapet and stone details from historic photos. The jury remarked, “The reinvention of this modern skyscraper utilizing historic tax credits and achieving LEED Gold certification demonstrates commitment to historic buildings.”

Landmarks Illinois is the state’s leading voice for historic preservation. Supported by a grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the awards program honors individuals and organizations whose works demonstrate a commitment to historic preservation.
